Burnout Recovery: My Wake-Up Call From Burnout to Balance
What Is Burnout?
Burnout is more than simply feeling tired after a busy week.
It is the result of prolonged stress, pressure and a lack of recovery. Eventually, it can impact your physical health, mental wellbeing, relationships, motivation and overall quality of life.
For many years, I didn’t realise I was experiencing burnout. I thought I was simply working hard, building a business, and that it was all part of the process. I naively believed the difficult moments would eventually pass.
Looking back now, the warning signs were everywhere. But when you are in the eye of the storm, it can be difficult to see what is happening around you.
This is my story of how I went from burnout to balance.
Throughout this article, I’ll share some of the lessons that helped me move from burnout to balance. If you’re currently facing similar challenges, you’ll also find a collection of free videos and helpful resources towards the end of this article, including practical tips on mindset, resilience, habits, gratitude and learning to say no.
My Experience of Living with Burnout
I have built and run businesses for over 25 years. While building my fitness brand, I slowly developed a lifestyle that looked successful from the outside but was becoming unsustainable behind the scenes.
This part of my journey had many highs. I took my £10,000 startup idea from my kitchen table and built it into a £7 million global brand. Highlights included World Champion Boxer Anthony Joshua joining as a strategic investor and ambassador, and appearing live on QVC when we sold out of our products.
My biggest highlight was always the customers and people I met along the way, which, looking back, was the first spark that motivated me to become a coach.
At this stage of my business career, I was a workaholic and lived under constant stress while facing many challenges.
For almost a decade, I seemed to hit a physical and mental wall every four to six weeks. My energy would collapse. My motivation would disappear. My body would force me to slow down. Yet every time, I simply pushed through and found a way to climb over or crawl around the wall in front of me. At the time, I saw it as dedication — a sign of my passion and determination.
Looking back, it was burnout.
In reality, I now know I could have been more successful, happier and healthier if my approach had been different, or if I had the right coach to guide me. This chapter of my life taught me that working hard, success and ambition do not have to come at the expense of your wellbeing.
I loved what I was building, but my passion had become an obsession. I was driven by ambition, success and the fear of failure.
I genuinely believed this was the price of chasing so-called success.
What I didn’t realise was that every day I was carrying a little more stress, a little more pressure and a little more exhaustion. Eventually, the weight becomes too much. No matter how mentally or physically strong we are, we all have a breaking point.
A few years later, I was diagnosed with ADHD. My doctor explained that the years of continuous stress I had been living under had significantly heightened my symptoms.
Looking back, I now realise that burnout recovery starts long before a crisis point. It begins with recognising the warning signs and making small changes before they become impossible to ignore.
The Burnout Symptoms I Ignored
At the time, it all felt normal. I had adapted to this new way of life. The reality was very different.
Some of the warning signs included:
- Very low energy
- Procrastination and lack of motivation for everyday tasks
- Anxiety and constant overthinking
- Poor sleep and insomnia
- Waking up during the night with racing thoughts and cold sweats
- Brain fog and poor decision-making
- Emotional numbness
- Loss of enjoyment and laughter
- Cycles of physical exhaustion
I also convinced myself it was temporary. I just needed to keep going until I got “there”. The problem was that every time I approached my target, I simply moved the goalposts without realising it. The pressure never stopped.
Becoming a Dad Changed Everything
Around this time, my daughter Estela had been born.
Like many parents, I was helping with the night shift while continuing to run a business. Those moments with my darling Estela became some of the most precious moments of my life, even if we were often both awake at 4am with me looking like a zombie.
In truth, they are moments I will always treasure and would do again in a heartbeat.
They grounded me. They reminded me what truly mattered.
When I look back now, I realise she wasn’t asking for a successful dad. She wanted a healthy dad. A dad who would be there to guide her through life as she grew up.
That perspective would become incredibly important later.
The Wake-Up Call
My biggest wake-up call came after months of chest tightness.
I convinced myself it was related to training and exercise.
Thankfully, something told me to get it checked. Maybe my guardian angel took things into their own hands and whispered something in my ear — who knows — but something shifted.
Within minutes of arriving at hospital, I was connected to a heart monitor.
The years of stress, pressure and living out of balance had taken their toll.
I was told I could have suffered a heart attack at any time, and that it was a minor miracle that I hadn’t.
Given that my dad had suffered a heart attack due to stress at a similar age, it hit me hard.
If I didn’t have a child then, as crazy as it sounds, I would probably have continued risking my life for the business I loved.
Thankfully, this moment changed everything.
Not overnight. Not instantly.
But it changed my thinking and I started looking at the bigger picture.
I always knew Estela was the most important thing in my life. She was, and always will be, my greatest love.
For the first time, I truly realised I couldn’t risk my daughter growing up without her dad.
That was the moment my burnout recovery journey began.
What Causes Burnout?
Burnout can sometimes come from one life-changing event, but more often it is the result of accumulated pressure over weeks, months or years.
It creeps up on us, almost as if somebody is adding an extra brick to an imaginary backpack that we carry around all day.
Common causes include:
- Constant stress without recovery
- Work and financial pressures
- Relationship challenges
- High responsibility and emotional load
- Perfectionism
- Poor boundaries
- Saying ‘Yes’ too often to things that dont serve us
- Not saying ‘No’ often enough to things, people and opportunities in business and life
- Lack of quality rest and recovery
- Always feeling that there is never enough time
Burnout is rarely caused by one single moment.
It builds and builds until your mind or body forces you to pay attention.
What Helped My Burnout Recovery?
Recovery wasn’t one big breakthrough.
My burnout recovery was a series of small changes repeated consistently.
There was also an important mindset shift where I had to recognise the true value of change in order to stay motivated and committed.
The good news is that improvements can begin within weeks — and sometimes even days.
Some of the things that helped me most were:
- My daily morning routine became vital including starting the day with gratitude
- Recovery time in my day and week became non-negotiable
- Creating healthier boundaries — be prepared to saying no to people and opportunities
- Managing stress earlier
- Spending time with positive people
- Prioritising movement and wellbeing
- Practising gratitude
- Developing a stronger, more positive mindset
- Understanding that there are many different metrics of we can judge ‘success’
- My night-time routine — including ending the day with gratitude
On my YouTube channel Life With Paul M ▶️ https://www.youtube.com/@LifeWithPaulM-Channel I cover many of these topics in greater detail.
My Route 66 Moment
Travel has been an important part of my burnout recovery journey.
In 2024, I took a solo Route 66 road trip across America.
I had done very little research and didn’t really have a plan, but something was pulling me towards the open road.
The journey gave me space to think, reflect and reconnect with myself.
On day one, driving from Las Vegas to Williams, Arizona, there was a moment that will stay with me forever.
I pulled over, stepped out of the car and simply lay down on the road.
For the first time in years, I could breathe.
That moment felt like the beginning of a process that took me from burnout to healing, from healing to awareness, and ultimately to balance.
What surprised me was how many people connected with the journey.
People weren’t connecting with highlights or achievements. They were connecting with vulnerability, honesty and the willingness to embrace change.
Ultimately, the pressures and struggles many of us carry are more similar than we realise.
Stress and the rat race of life do not discriminate.
We are all vulnerable to burnout.
That experience eventually inspired me to launch my YouTube channel, Life With Paul M, where I share lessons from business, mindset, travel and personal growth.
The following year I travelled to Peru, another journey that played an important role in my personal growth and recovery.
Alongside visiting Machu Picchu, I attended a retreat in the Amazon jungle where I participated in ancient plant medicine ceremonies led by local shamans.
The experience brought incredible highs, difficult moments and a much deeper perspective on life.
Looking back, it was one of the final pieces of the puzzle that helped move me from healing to growth.
You don’t need to travel across the world to experience meaningful change, though.
For me, spending time outdoors and in nature has also been hugely important.
Only a few weeks ago, I stood at the top of Snowdon in Wales. Every time I complete that hike, it helps me reset, quieten the overthinking mind and reconnect with myself

Frequently Asked Questions
What is burnout, and how is it different from everyday stress?
Everyone experiences stress from time to time, but burnout is different. Burnout happens after a prolonged period of pushing yourself too hard and for too long whether that be mentally / physically or both.
It can leave you feeling drained, overwhelmed and empty on emotion even when you know you should feel happier and less down in the dumps. While stress often comes and goes, burnout tends to build gradually over months or even years, this can lead to really putting your health at massive risk (as I did!). BUT the good news is that Burnout can be reversed which in turn will often help you look at life through far more open, thankful and knowledgeable eyes.
What are the warning signs and how can I can avoid it?
Yes, there many warning signs of Burnout creeping up before it really hits us! Whether that be low energy & motivation, poor sleep, brain fog, struggling to sleep, being short and snappy with people are just some of the signs to look out for.
The GOOD NEWS is that within a few weeks of making small changes to your daily routine, being more aware about wellness and with the right support you can work through and avoid burning out. Think about a ship being off course, it only needs a small change of direction that over many miles will then end up travelling in a totally different direction. Small consistent changes over time can change your wellbeing, how you manage stress and how you feel in your life.
